Cuba’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan: “I followed AzTC’s work when I still lived in Cuba”
The Azerbaijan Translation Centre (AzTC) on Wednesday received a visit from Alfredo Nieves Portuondo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cuba, for a roundtable discussion with its Director Afag Masud.
The Ambassador highly valued the Centre’s projects tailored to contribute to promoting understanding, friendship and brotherhood among nations.
“Before assuming office as an ambassador in Azerbaijan, I held a number of diplomatic and international posts in Russia, Ukraine, and Hungary. For me, however, Azerbaijan is completely a different country. Cuba and Azerbaijan are bound by strong interlinkages of friendship that are centuries old. Our countries share many common denominators in terms of the proportion of the population as well as the struggle for freedom, and preserving our national values,” the diplomat said. “I followed AzTC’s work when I still lived in Cuba, visiting your multi-lingual website. The work you do is important and significant for mutual understanding between nations.”
Afag Masud, in turn, thanked Ambassador Portuondo for kind words, and talked on projects serving as a valuable means of fostering unity and brotherhood between Cuba and Azerbaijan.
“Our core activity is to draft and implement projects involving inter-literary exchanges. The two-volume book “The Anthology of Modern Azerbaijan Literature” translated into multiple languages is being translated into Spanish. I think the translation and publication of books about the lives of great leaders of the two countries – Heydar Aliyev and Fidel Castro will ensure wider access to these historical persons. World history has seen many leaders. However, Heydar Aliyev and Fidel Castro have had outstanding achievements through creating historical records full of love for their Motherland and People. Their lives provide an example of living, citizenship and struggle for everybody, in particular for the rising generation,” she said.
Agreement was reached in this context on the translation of the book on Nation-wide leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev’s life into the Spanish language and its publication in Cuba, as well as the translation into the Azerbaijani language of the book on Cuban leader Fidel Castro’s life.
In conclusion, the book about Che Guevara, a glorified associate of Fidel Castro, was presented to the diplomat.
